about

Glires is the piece I previewed at the Church of Sound in Nottingham at the tail end of 2022. The performance was well received but listening back to the recording I thought I could do make some improvements and I'd only made a stereo recording of the overall mix so this is a studio reworking.

It is a long hypnotic track, with slowly developing sequences flowing throughout it's length. Hand-played parts lurk in the distance. Live, I was experimenting with allowing slow fades and ultra-slow LFOs to play with the sounds leaving my hands free for notes. This is evident on some of the layers here but I also took advantage of the freedom to overdub conventionally,

This was all created using plugins within Ableton Live. In the concert it meant I just had a single keyboard and laptop. Orthodoxy suggests this is not a popular way to perform, but happily nobody seemed to mind. I hoped this would be the case; as long as you are clearly engaged in making music, the specific gear isn't that important. Much of the final version was created on the sofa with a mini keyboard.

For those who care about such things, I used: Arturia (SEM, Solina), Korg (MS20, Polysix), uHe (Diva, Zebralette) pluigns effected with Arturia (MiniFilter, Plate 140) NI (Phasis), iZotope (Ozone), Soundtoys (Echoboy Jr), Valhala (VintageVerb), and Live's inbuilt effects

Thanks to Jez Creek for the invitation to play at CoS.

Apollo is a late addition. It also lives in this space of long, shifting sequencer explorations.
